E3 2013: Ubisoft Undecided On Xbox One Pre-Owned Restrictions

The major bombshell dropped on us last night was that Sony would impose no console DRM or used game restrictions on the PS4 but Microsoft is evidently still going ahead with that model. It’s something that could ultimately cause issues for the Xbox One especially considering publishers aren’t even sure what to do yet.

It’s rather precarious having no restrictions on one console and and then have to define parameters and specifics for those on another console. This will be up to each publisher although it’s theoretically more money in their pockets so there’s no reason to fuss.

When quizzed about Ubisoft’s approach to the console’s restriction, the company’s CEO Yves Guillemot replied, “What I like is because they are not taking a fee, it will give us the option to work out what service we have to give.

“It’s a good thing they are not taking any fee. We have not decided yet; we are waiting to see what Sony will do, and then we will decide after that. For us it is too early to take a position on that; we are really watching what the three players are doing.”

He added, “I think it’s good Microsoft gave us their position, so we actually know what they are going to do.”

It’s a bizarre system from a publisher’s perspective seeing as consoles are usually treated in the same regard with respect to pricing, marketing etc but what exactly should publishers do with Microsoft’s restrictions? After all they are supposedly the ones who wanted it to happen.
